FOURTEEN
“Yo, what’s ya name? Where you from, Cuz?” barked an inmate as he walked past the table Reese was eating at.
Jail is a hard place to ever get truly comfortable in and Reese was finding that out the hard way. He just wanted to mind his business and be left alone, but it really wasn’t that simple. There was always one nigga who wanted to try the new inmates to see what they were made of. Usually, it was a nigga who was frustrated with the way that his own case was going. Misery loves company, and this particular inmate was extremely miserable.
After sitting in the county for 9 months, only to learn that he was about to get hit with 20 years Fed time, the inmate really didn’t give a fuck about life anymore. He was broke, lonely, and his heart was filled with pure hatred and spite.
“Maybe you ain’t heard me! I’m Fred-O and I run shit over on this side. I asked you what your name is and where you from!” he continued.
Reese finally looked up at the man, giving him the attention that he desired. “Look, bro, I’m just tryin’ to eat this nasty ass meatloaf and mind my business. I ain’t even really tryin’ to hold no conversation right now,” explained Reese.
Reese’s answer didn’t sit too well with Fred-O though. “I ain’t askin’ you just to be askin’ you, Cuz! If you ain’t from Southside or claimin’ Crip, you can’t sit over here, ya feel me?” continued Fred-O.
Reese could already tell where the confrontation was going. Things were about to get ugly. Fred-O had a crazy look about him, and there is no way to truly reason with a crazy person. Talking it out was out of the question.
“So what it’s gonna be?” asked Fred-O as he moved closer to Reese and stood over him.
Fred-O was a pretty big man. He was 6’3 and had that classic prison build, with a lot of upper body strength from doing hundreds of pushups a day. However, it wasn’t just Fred-O’s muscles that intimidated people. His eyes were his scariest feature. They were dead; almost like Fred-O had seen too many terrible things to have any emotion left in them.
Sometimes in life, rationale goes out the window. At the end of the day, all a man knows is how to fight and survive. For Reese, this was one of those times. Working off of pure adrenaline, emotion and pent up anger, Reese hopped up from his seat. Taking advantage of the element of surprise, he threw a wild right hook at Fred-O. The punch landed across Fred-O’s lower lip and left a nice sized cut. It was on!
Fred-O countered with a right cross, that rocked Reese’s chin so hard it caused him to bite his tongue. That was a type of pain Reese had never felt before, but instead of it slowing him down, the pain made Reese even madder and more ready to fight!
“C’mon then, pussy! Let’s get it!” said Reese as he bounced on the balls of his feet like a middleweight boxer.
